VIDEO: The Evolution of a Sample

Absence makes the heart grow fonder or so they say. I PROMISE that I will get Episode 3 of the podcast up soon. I’ve been so uninspired, which really means I’ve been lazy and unorganized. I gotta make use of this space though, so stay with me here.

For weeks, I’ve been wondering why I like “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida. I’ve come to the conclusion that I only enjoy the sample within it. Here’s how I discovered its evolution.

The original recording comes from “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” by Etta James. Look how stylish she is in this footage from 1962! Love me some Etta.

Fast forward a few years after Christina Aguilera’s cover (yikes) and you have Avicii’s “Levels”. It features the above Etta James track.

From there, I can only assume Flo Rida used Avicii’s remix. I’m too lazy to google this or look at album credits. Just let me feel good about discovering things without leaving the Internet.

Is the music industry really getting this lazy? Can anyone create a sample and rap over it? I should try this sometime.

I decided to go ahead and put the second episode together for you all. There are still some glitches I am working through when it comes to recording. Garageband is a fickle mistress and picks up on all my faults. Aside from the sound quality on the last track, everything else is the same. I rant, rave and ramble. I even share a story about the last show I attended, which was Wild Beasts in Atlanta. If you need a clue about the theme for this podcast, I’ve included a video below for you. Enjoy!

Well, I told you I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to update this much. I really don’t like making promises I can’t keep. A lot of drama has developed since I started this project. I somehow became depressed about even creating it. However, I can’t let it fall by the wayside. Ultimately, I had to apologize for being a douchebag, which still perplexes me but I don’t want to get into more trouble. Let’s just say I shouldn’t let anyone dictate what I choose to create or talk about. The Internet isn’t about ethics though. It’s here so I can share videos like this one of a French kid jamming out to “The Bay” by Metronomy.

And after you watch that, you should watch their new video for “Everything Goes My Way.” Such a lovely track!

By the way, the second episode of the podcast should be up soon. The tracks are ready to go. I just have to record the parts where I ramble. In the words of Tim Gunn, I’ll MAKE IT WORK!

I am so behind on the happenings of Tavi, but finally discovering Rookie Magazine has made up for that. While it is geared towards teenage girls, some of the content remains relevant even for women. For instance, this entry on Getting Over Girl Hate should be required reading for every female. According to the website, there is a different theme each month, and it is updated three times a day (after school, dinnertime, and before bed). The Ask A Grown Man/Grown Woman segment is already my favorite bit. Advice never gets old. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

While I was browsing Huffington Post, I came across this site. As someone who enjoys lusting over dead men, this site is a history buff’s dream come true. The entries even feature data organized in graphs provided by Daytum to support the hotness. I’ll definitely be bookmarking this for later.

Gospel of Good Taste Podcast: Episode 1

The first episode of the podcast is here! And boy is it bootleg. No, seriously. I recorded this in my bathroom on my mac with a handmade pop filter. Needless to say, I will be investing in better equipment soon. Silliness aside, this first episode features an introduction of the Gospel of Good Taste, and I talk about my future plans for this project. I use the word AWESOME a lot, and it’s okay for you to have secondhand embarrassment of my review of White Denim’s Memphis gig. Welcome to the Gospel of Good Taste! You are probably wondering what all this entails. Well, let me give you a little background information. The Gospel of Good Taste started out as a zine project for a grad school assignment, and it has since morphed into an exciting endeavor. With this website, I hope to launch a podcast, live stream, and whatever else my heart desires. I know it is going to take some hard work and dedication, but I hope to spread the Gospel of Good Taste to you weekly.

However, this website is not all about me. It includes you as well! When I created the Gospel of Good Taste, I wanted to start a movement that involved community and the arts. In its infant stages, it was very much D.I.Y. guerrilla tactics, but I have come to embrace the Internet. With this website, I would very much like to create a community both online and offline.

Hopefully, the Gospel of Good Taste will become a new outlet for art, music, communication, and culture. Do not be afraid to contribute to this site. You might discover you are really awesome at writing reviews or taking photos. You could even meet people in your surrounding area and start a gig club. The possibilities of the Gospel of Good Taste are endless, but it cannot thrive without you and me. So help spread the good news today! Let us keep the Gospel of Good Taste around for a long time.
